Presidential Fitness Challenge
The President's Challenge has rewarded and motivated millions of students since the first Presidential Physical Fitness Award in 1966. Our physical education department administers the President's Challenge Fitness Testing in the Fall and Spring trimesters. Students perform the five fitness tests below.
Awards
The Presidential Physical Fitness Award
This award recognizes students who achieve an outstanding level of physical fitness. Students who score at or above the 85th percentile on all five events are eligible for this award.
The National Physical Fitness Award
Students who score above the 50th percentile on all five events - demonstrating a basic, yet challenging, level of physical fitness - are eligible for this award. Students may choose either pull-ups or the flexed-arm hang.
- One Mile Run/Walk: To measure the ability of the heart and lungs to maximize the use of oxygen by fastest time to cover a one-mile distance.
- Curl-ups: To measure abdominal strength and endurance by maximum number of curl-ups performed in one minute.
- Shuttle Run: To measure agility by performing the shuttle run as fast as possible.
- Pull-ups: To measure upper body strength and endurance by maximum number of pull-ups completed or Flexed-arm Hang: To maintain the flexed-arm hang position as long as possible.
- Sit and Reach: To measure flexibility of lower back and hamstrings by farthest distance reached.
